Product Certification

The FT702 is probably the most tested wind sensor in the world. It has passed over 28 independent tests including sand, dust, ice, vibration, corrosion, hail and lightning protection.

The FT742 and FT722 will be tested to these same standards before release. As they are built to the same high standards as the FT702, we fully expect them to pass these tests. The FT742 has already passed the FT Highly Accelerated Life Cycle test in which the sensor is temperature cycled from +125°C to -90°C whilst being vibrated at 30g rms. ​​ 

In addition, all our wind sensors are 100% wind tunnel checked before despatch to ensure that they will give many years of reliable service, even in the harshest conditions. The wind tunnel is calibrated annually and sensors are regularly selected from production and their calibration cross-checked in a MEASNET wind tunnel. This ensures the accuracy of FT wind sensors.

Corrosion Resistant: Tested to category C5-M High of BS EN ISO 12944 (1998) in a neutral salt spray atmosphere for 1440 hours.

Wind Blown Sand & Dust Test: Sand particles for three hours and then dust particles for three hours, at 29m/s air velocity, concentration 1.1g/m³.
EN 60068-2-13 (1999)
Low Air Pressure Test M: Four hours at a constant low pressure typical to 3000 metres above sea level. Additional tests in a dedicated altitude wind tunnel have shown that the sensor measures accurately up to 4000 metres.

Solar Heating Test: 24 hours of UV radiation with an ambient temperature of 55°C, irradiance of 1120 W/m².

Sinusoidal Vibration Test Fc: 5Hz to 500Hz, 1 octave/minute sweep rate, 5 sweep cycles, 3 axes.

Random Vibration Test: 5Hz to 500Hz, 90 minutes per axis, 0.0075g²/Hz severity over 3 axes.

Drop and Topple Test Ec: Dropped 6 times at different angles from one metre onto steel faced concrete.

Hail Impact Test 10.17: 10 hail stones, 7.5g each, shot at the sensor at 23m/s.

Steady State Humidity Test Cab: Stationary relative humidity +93% at +40°C for 240 hours.

Cyclic Humidity Test Db: Six 24 hour cycles, upper temperature +55°C.

Sealed to IP67. Ingress Protection Test IP6X Dust Protected: Exposed to a dust chamber for 8 hours. Temporary Immersion Test IPX7: Submerged in one metre depth of water for 30 minutes.

Icing/Freezing Rain Test:
Anti-Icing: With heater switched on, the sensor was exposed to freezing rain in airflow of 15m/s at -14°C. After 38 minutes ice had built up on the test bar to 37mm but the sensor itself remained ice-free. De-Icing: The sensor was ice-free in under 15 minutes.

Environmental Safety

The FT702 is a combined wind speed and direction sensor. The case is hard anodised 6026 T6 aluminium alloy surrounding a hydrophobic acoustic cavity and containing printed circuit boards, components and connectors together with associated wiring. RoHS-2 compliant.
